The Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development (EJS Center) was founded in 2018 to be a catalyst for political and social change across Africa by helping unleash its most abundant latent power — its women. The EJS Center aims to amplify the voice of women and girls in all spheres of life by increasing the representation of women in public service leadership roles in Africa. Through a unique blend of programming, advocacy, archival research, and museum exhibitions, the EJS Center seeks to become a premier institution dedicated to advancing and sustaining women’s political and social development on the continent.

The EJS Center is seeking to hire an experienced Director of Communications and Research to develop and implement an integrated communications and research strategy to support its work championing women’s ascension to the highest levels of leadership and challenging systemic barriers to girls’ and women’s advancement.

The Director of Communications and Research is responsible for creating and implementing communication strategies and producing research projects to raise the profile of the EJS Center and its key stakeholders. The Director of Communications and Research will report directly to the Chief Operations Officer and work with a team operating from multiple locations, including partners, staff and stakeholders of the EJS Center. The role will include working closely and collaboratively with an external agency for communications strategy and execution.




 Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy for the EJS Center, aimed at raising its profile amongst key stakeholders across Africa and internationally and supporting its efforts to advocate for women’s public leadership.
  • Coordinating speaking commitments and media engagements on behalf of Madam Sirleaf and other high-level representatives of the Center. This will include writing compelling remarks and developing presentation materials for key leaders within the EJS Center as well as managing relationships with external organizations hosting events.
  • Managing the EJS Center’s events program, conceiving events and working with relevant team members to manage their execution.
  • Creating promotional materials, e.g., brochures, newsletters, and bulletins according to the Center’s communications strategy and standards.
  • Managing the communications budget.
  • Managing the communications team including staff, consultants and volunteers, and ensuring the continued growth and development of the team.
  • Managing and developing key performance indicators (KPIs), including setting qualitative benchmarks and clear objectives for the EJS Center’s communications. Analyzing and leveraging KPI data to determine trends and optimizing content, media, messaging, and audiences accordingly.
  • Developing key messages and talking points for the EJS Center and assisting in training designated key stakeholders to deliver these messages.
  • Staying up to date on events and trends within political leadership across Africa—understanding respective socio-political landscapes to ensure effective crisis communications where necessary.
  • Writing and editing grant proposals.
  • Managing media relations on behalf of the Center, with a particular focus on building relationships with African journalists and media outlets across the continent. This will also include the drafting and issuing of press releases, organization of media briefings, and acting as a spokesperson for the Center.
  • Managing the production of multimedia assets, e.g., graphics and videos, in line with the brand identity of the Center, with the support of designers and external consultants on an as-needed basis.



Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Setting the strategy for the EJS Center’s research program.
  • Designing and managing research projects and output.
  • Developing strategies to effectively disseminate and communicate about the research released by the Center and overseeing their implementation.
  • Managing the implementation of a baseline study research project.
  • Working closely with the Program Director on research projects.
  • Supervising and developing the research team including staff, consultants and volunteers.
  • Ensuring the delivery and maintenance of a Data Dashboard project, which tracks women’s participation in public service.
  • Building out a network of freelance researchers and consultants who can be called upon to assist the Center in delivering research projects.
  • Reviewing and editing research reports drafted by internal team members or external freelancers and consultants.
  • Developing strong links with research institutions for potential collaboration.



The ideal candidate will fit the profile below:


  • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters or other advanced degree in a relevant field is an advantage.



  • Proven experience in communications, PR, marketing or research.
  • Excellent writing skills with proven experience of copywriting for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience managing research projects.
  • Strong understanding of integrated communications strategies.


  • Demonstrable experience of developing strong relationships with media contacts (with a particular focus in African countries) especially those interested in public leadership.
  • Experience managing a small team.
  • An appreciation of the challenges current and aspiring women public leaders face in Africa.
  • Experience with a broad range of communications approaches and tools.


  • Experience conducting research.
  • Extensive experience in public relations.
  • A strong understanding of digital and social media.
  • Experience with managing external partners, including agencies and other organizations.
  • Experience in the fields of governance, development, and/or gender issues in Africa.
  • International experience is preferred, or demonstratable understanding of cultural differences.
  • Experience in government, civil service, or political campaigns highly valued.




  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to write and speak persuasively.
  • Confidence in using digital communication tools or a keen interest in developing additional skills in this area.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a meticulous approach to all communications and research outputs.
  • Strong computer skills, especially proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Highly collegiate and collaborative: comfortable with working across multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and partners in different locations.


  • Excellent organizational and administration skills.
  • Strong understanding of visual design and an eye for detail.
  • Strong project management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and expectations.
  • Ability to execute tasks with confidentiality, integrity and professionalism.


  • French, Portuguese or Arabic language skills.
  • Confidence in using social media and related toolsets.
  • Knowledge of protocol and government processes.


The salary is 72,000 USD per year.
